What can you do about a partially dislodged tooth?
There are times where your tooth is knocked loose. There are also some times where your tooth comes partway out of its socket. Dentists call this an extruded tooth. If the tooth's nerves and blood vessels are still attached then you may still be able to save the tooth. To save the tooth, you must see your dentist as soon as possible. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers or apply a cold pack to alleviate the pain before you get to the dental office.
What will your dentist do about a partially dislodged tooth?
First, your dentist will clean the area and then put the tooth back into the socket. A plastic splint or wire brackets will be used to keep the tooth stable until it heals. If the tooth's nerves or blood vessels are damaged then your dentist may suggest a root canal treatment. This will prevent the tooth from becoming discoloured or developing an abscess. Your dentist will do some tests in order to find out whether nerves have been damaged. Some of these tests are inconclusive especially right after an injury so you may have to be tested again during another appointment.
If your dentist decides that you need a root canal treatment then you may need to have your tooth crowned or capped after the root canal. In some cases, it is impossible to save the tooth. You may have to remove the tooth in this case. Your dentist will recommend the best way to restore the space created from the missing tooth.
