Normal Hair Growth

Each hair on a person’s head comes from an individual hair follicle. Throughout a person’s life each hair follicle will produce several hairs, and it goes through a cycle of hair production.

The first phase of the cycle is the growth phase, and each hair grows approximately 1cm a month. The growth phase lasts between 2 and 6 years, and at any point in time, usually around 90% of the hair follicles on a person’s head are in this stage. The remaining 10% of hairs are usually in the resting phase. The resting phase lasts for 2 or 3 months, and the hair does not grow at all during this time. After the resting phase the hair drops out of the follicle, and a new hair growth cycle begins. Humans lose about 50-100 hairs each day as they reach the end of the resting phase. There is no particular area of the scalp affected, and so these hairs can come from anywhere on the head.

Excessive hair loss, also known as alopecia, can cause people to shed more hair than is normal. It can affect men, women and children, and there can be many different causes. This section deals with the different forms of hair loss:
